Ratchet Strap Installation Guide

Safety First

Always inspect straps and hardware before use. Never exceed the working load limit. Wear appropriate PPE when installing or tensioning straps.

Proper Ratchet Strap Installation

1
Inspect Components

Before installation, inspect all components for damage or wear:

  • Check webbing for cuts, fraying, or abrasion
  • Inspect hooks and fittings for cracks or deformation
  • Ensure ratchet mechanism operates smoothly
  • Verify working load limit markings are legible
Note: Never use damaged or worn components. Replace any questionable parts before proceeding.
2
Position the Strap

Route the strap around the load and through the ratchet:

  • Place protective sleeves or edge guards where strap contacts sharp edges
  • Ensure strap lies flat without twists or knots
  • Position ratchet for easy access during tensioning
  • Keep strap path as straight as possible

3
Attach End Fittings

Secure hooks or fittings to anchor points:

  • Use appropriate fittings for your anchor points (flat hooks for D-rings, wire hooks for stake pockets, etc.)
  • Ensure fittings are fully seated and cannot slip off
  • Position hooks so load pulls in the strongest direction
  • Use multiple straps for heavy or large loads
Warning

Never hook straps back onto themselves. This reduces strength and can cause failure.

4
Apply Tension

Operate the ratchet to tension the strap:

  • Pump ratchet handle until desired tension is achieved
  • Stop before maximum ratchet angle (typically 90°)
  • Ensure webbing is properly seated in ratchet mechanism
  • Check that load is secure and not shifting
Pro Tip: For critical loads, use a tension measuring device to ensure proper tension without over-tightening.
5
Secure and Protect

Finalize the installation:

  • Engage ratchet safety latch if equipped
  • Tuck loose webbing ends to prevent flapping
  • Apply protective sleeves if not already in place
  • Mark highly tensioned straps for easy identification

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Problem Possible Cause Solution
Strap won't hold tension Worn ratchet mechanism, damaged pawl, or improper webbing routing Inspect ratchet components, ensure proper webbing path, replace if necessary
Webbing slipping through ratchet Insufficient tension, worn teeth, or wrong webbing thickness Increase tension, check for wear, verify correct strap type for ratchet
Difficulty operating ratchet Corrosion, dirt/debris, or lack of lubrication Clean and lubricate mechanism, replace if severely corroded
Hooks bending or opening Overloading, improper hook selection, or side loading Use higher capacity straps, select proper hook style, avoid side loads

Maintenance Recommendations

Proper maintenance extends strap life and ensures safety:

Cleaning
  • Wipe down webbing with mild soap and water
  • Remove dirt/debris from ratchet mechanism
  • Dry thoroughly before storage
  • Avoid harsh chemicals that may degrade materials
Lubrication
  • Lightly lubricate ratchet pivot points
  • Use dry lubricant for dusty environments
  • Avoid getting lubricant on webbing
  • Wipe excess lubricant after application
Inspection Schedule
Frequency Inspection Items Action if Failed
Before each use Webbing, hooks, ratchet operation Do not use, tag out for repair/replacement
Monthly Detailed inspection of all components Remove from service if any defects found
Annually Complete inspection by qualified personnel Retire straps showing significant wear
